Chalk magic Exploring letters and their sounds!

The children at Uxbridge are exploring, experimenting and testing out ideas about reading, writing and mathematics as part of their everyday experience at their ECE.  Today a friend was very busy writing and making marks with the chalk.  There was alot of chats about letters and the sounds they make, and learning about our upper and lower case letters. It is great to bring literacy outdoors where the children can use their gross motor skills to explore using the chalk.

Matariki Hakari

Matariki Hakari
Tuesday 25th June 2024

Thank you all for your contributions to our Matariki Hakari.  The tamariki did a great job at helping prepare all of our delicious fresh vegetables for our soup, peeling and chopping our carrots, Kumara, potatoes, parsnip, broccoli and onion.  Some of them learnt some new skills and our more experienced mini chefs also helped others as well as doing a great job themselves.  We came together at lunch time to enjoy our soup with some fresh bread rolls, our soup quickly disappeared as the tamariki enjoyed bowl after bowl of our hearty soup.

As we enjoy our Hakari we give thanks to the third star of Matariki,
Tupuānuku is associated with food grown in the ground. We give thanks to homegrown kai that can be shared with whānau and friends and look to Tupuānuku as we intend to plant new crops for the winter.

Easel Art In the Sunshine

Today we had lots of fun experimenting with mixing colours using the water paints and mini easel.

The sun was shining, it was so great to see the children painting with each other alongside.  Drawing on a easel lets the children explore a different perspective as well as being able to hold their paint brush at a different angle as the make strokes with the paint.  There was alot of conversation about colour and how to make secondary colours by mixing.

Matariki Storytime at the Howick library!

This morning as part of our learning about Matariki, we visited the Howick Library for some waiata and stories. We were very excited to see our friend Andy and Leanne who had lots of fun things ready for us. The pukapuka that we listened to were The little kiwi's Matariki and  Twinkle twinkle Little eyes.    We were very impressed with Andy's beautiful singing and his ukelele playing, we happily sung along as we knew some of the words, followed by some dancing and actions to the Matariki Macarena, a kindy favourite.  At the end of the session Andy had organised a special treat, some Matariki star wands for us to take with us, what a lovely suprise.  Thank you to the Howick library for having us,  we always love being invited to these events, and gain so much learning and experience by being involved in the community.
