Exploring movement with paint
Over the last week we have begun exploring the concept of how things move using paint. Using spinning tops, salad spinners and pendulums we have discovered fun ways to learn about the differnet types of forces that can make paint move.
Centrifugal Force is the concept used to describe the perceived force that pushes an object away from the centre of a rotating or spinning system. When you put paint on a spinning surface (like our salad spinner), the centrifugal force pushes the paint outward from the centre. This happens because the spinning surface causes everything attached to it, including the paint, to move in a straight line—away from the centre. The faster it spins, the more the paint spreads out in circular patterns.
Pendulum painting involves swinging a weighted cup filled with paint, creating unique and unpredictable patterns on paper as it moves. This experience fosters creativity, exploration and a developing understanding of basic scientific concepts like motion, gravity, forces and patterns.
