A walk to Matariki Marae

This morning we took a group of  children to the Matariki Marae as part of our termly programme.

The Majority of the children on this walk have not been on this trip so it was all new to them learning and understanding the different protocols and special waiata and karakia on the Marae.

We listened to the Pepeha song, and the children learnt some new words in Reo , such as Maunga (Mountain), Awa (Ocean), Whanau (family).  The children listened line by line and followed and echoed the words, they did such a tremendous job.

We also learnt some parts of our body through song, and enjoyed dancing to a song with lots of actions.

The children and kaiako and enjoyed morning tea, and then we went for short walk into the Ngahere (Bush) and listened using our Taringa (ears) to the birds in the bush.  We noticed the big trees and picked some kawakawa leaves that were shaped like hearts.

We are so lucky at Uxbridge having such a great connection with our Marae, the Ngahere is also familiar as we visit often and so do our whanau.
