"Attention...this is your Pilot speaking!..."
How lucky were we to have a special visitor at Uxbridge yesterday morning, Pilot Simon, also known as Olivia's Daddy, to share with us all about his exciting job flying airplanes.
The children sat on the mat eager to learn about the different aircrafts from huge Boeing 777-300 used for long haul international flights to smaller airbus planes that travel domestically or as far as Australia. We learned how long it takes to become a pilot, what we need to be good at to become a pilot- like listening and counting, and also the different buildings such as an airplane hangar, air traffic control tower and airport terminal. Simon showed us a plane just like the one he flies and identified the different parts like the wings, engines, tail and cockpit.
Next came one of the most exciting moments, when the children were given the opportunity to try on real pilot uniforms too! They each took turns dressing up and learning about the stripes on the pilot's shoulder (epaulettes), and discovered that if you have four stripes, you're the Captain!
The children loved sharing about their own personal experiences of flying in planes too, these moments of storytelling helped them make meaningful connections between their own lives and the world around them, enhancing their understanding of the wider community and the important roles of people within it.
Simon ended his visit by generously gifting each child a sticker sheet of the awesome planes he talked about and a colouring sheet of a plane just like the one he flies. Later that afternoon the children were also delighted to receive a 'jet plane' lolly after bubble time as a thank you from Simon and Alana.
We would like to extend a HUGE thank you to Simon for such an inspiring, informative visit :-)
