The Uxbridge Rubbish Busters

Taking part in World clean up week we created a team of Uxbridge Rubbish Busters. The  Rubbish busters went out into the bush and cleaned up all of the rubbish they could find - busting that rubbish into the bin and keeping it out of our Rivers, Streams, Oceans and away from the birds and other wildlife. What a lot of rubbish we found in such a small bush area - We got a neat Tidy Kiwi badge and some gloves  and bags to use to take part in this important mission. We even got a special certificate. Tino Pai Rubbish Buster - what an important job we did. Thanks you for  helping keep New Zealand Beautiful.

Te Wiki o te Reo Māori Language week

What a tumeke week it has been here at Uxbridge as we embraced using our Te Reo all around the Centre!

We spent our mat times singing beautiful waita, practising with rakau and dancing with poi's.

We have embraced all things Māori in our arts area, you will see our walls are dazzling with new displays.

Koru spirals collage, meaning new beginnings, new life and growth.

Playdough designs using tiki and the original marae that was once located next-door in the Emila Maude Nixon Garden of Memories, where now Te Whare o Matariki is located.

We made beautiful taonga which is treasures with clay, which is a little trickier than playdough to mould into shape, but the tamariki did a fantastic job!

We even made some Manu stencil prints and learnt the Te Reo names for them!

Maui and the Sun, once again proved to be popular the tamariki enjoyed listening to the stories and engaging with drama as the reenacted out the book in characters and enjoyed some mixed media art.

Te Ika a Maui is another great traditional myth that is enjoyed! We read many different variations of this story from different authors and all proved interesting and engaging!
After we read the story we made out own Ika which is fish. We jumped into our waka and acted out the story ourselves! We caught the North Island too!

We also harvested some harakeke and did some traditional weaving and practised weaving with our weaving boards. What great mahi!
