Rocket bubbles!!

With the warmer weather coming, an interest in bubbles has emerged.  We have spent these beautiful late winter days blowing, chasing, popping and talking about bubbles.  As a way to extend and further explore this interest, we have been experimenting with a bubble rocket.  This brings a whole new element to children's understanding of bubbles, how they are formed and other ways to make them.  The children use their body weight to push the air through the tube, which then pushes the rocket up into the air, which forces the bubbles out through the bubble rings at the bottom.  Science in the sun!

Aren't they proud of their transformation into their new characters!!
There was lots of role play and roaring and stomping in the backyard, just another fun way using their current interest of dinosaurs as a vehicle to extend and enhance play.

Excavating the egg!!

There has been many suprises in our paper mache eggs and this was one, another egg!!  A dinosaur egg, was there anything hiding inside this egg???  With our excavating tools we set to find out.  Our Palaeontologists were on the task!!

Felix uses his senses - his touch and feel to see if he could break the egg open

After tapping away with our pick for quite some time,
our patience wore a little thin, it was time to try the scissors!!

There was great teamwork involved as Gareth took over and persistence
paid off as inside to our delight was a........

A little baby dinosaur!!
We then gave it a bath so it was all nice and clean

I wonder what it is, I wonder what is hiding??

After showing patience and perseverance, we finally opened the Paper Mache to see what was inside.  We have been working on the paper Mache for weeks now.  Gluing the paper on the balloon and then finally painting it.
·  On the Thursday 10th August we found a egg in the Green Mache, we still have to find what is inside, by digging with the special tools.
·  On Tuesday the 15th August we found a tiny yellow duck in the Orange Mache and A Kiwi in the Blue one.  We all had the opportunity to guess what was inside Can you believe it, Paige guessed the Kiwi!

Lots of toys (Arian), an  elephant , a unicorn ( Chloe M ), a Cheetah (Kain) Chocolate (Felix), giant T Rex (Gareth), an egg (Iris), a Kiwi (Paige) and a Crocodile (Evan) where some of the suggestions.
It is important for children to not always have instant gratification.  This is technically called Delayed Gratification.  Delayed gratification, is the ability to resist temptation for an immediate reward and wait for a reward later reward.  Generally, delayed gratification is associated with resisting a smaller but more enduring reward in order to receive a larger one later.  A growing body of literature has linked the ability to delay gratification to a host of other positive outcomes, including academic success, physical health, psychological health, and social competence,

Our Paper Mache Project!

First we had to make the  recipe for the Glue. Then we had to rip the newspaper and stick it to our balloons. When the paste was made and following on from the instructions proudly shared  by Gareth, we applied this to our balloons (because this was popular Liz , blew up a few).  The paste was mainly applied with our fingers and hands, with some  children preferring to use a paintbrush.  Next we had to wait for our mache to dry before we could add the next layer.  This has been quite a long project .  Being winter it has taken a while to dry . As well as the colds and winter chills that are part of winter.
