Clay Taonga

Using Clay is a special resource as it is a natural substance gifted to us from Paptuanuku. We used some traditional images to inspire us making some special Taonga and they turned out great.

Kai Hakari

Matariki is a time for Kai and a time to be together - this year our Kai Hakari was inspired by the story Twinkle Twinkle Matariki where we shared a feast of roast vegetables and hokey pokey ice cream. The tamariki all contributed by bringing in a potato or kumara and then helped to prepare, peel and cook the vegetables. We shared these together at lunch with some sour cream and a yummy bowl of ice cream. How delicious.

Our Matariki Stars

Tīrama, tīrama, ngā whetu

Tīrama, tīrama, ngā whetū

Twinkle Twinkle little star.......

Here we are making our Matariki star's with a little glue, gold, silver and yellow collage pieces and a little bit of gold glitter to make them shine so bright.

Once our stars were dry and cut out, we used some woven flax and some pieces of string to hang them in the night sky.  Check out our Matariki stars.

A Friday Drive!

Off in the car on an adventure. But where too? “Away!” Mason said

We put our seatbelts on, click click click and off we went. Oh no…out of petrol, we didn’t get very far.
After a fill up at the station we stopped for ice creams… we shared quite a few of those actually! Before we had a breakdown and our door fell off. Not to worry Mason was on the job and with the door fastened safely back on, and one extra passenger we were off !

What fun imaginary play where the kids took turn to drive, come up with ideas on where we went and enjoyed being in the moment together.

The art of weaving

We had a chat about some of the reasons weaving was used by māori. Ropes for fishing, baskets for cooking, mats for sitting and we even saw some beautiful bassinettes that were woven for pēpē , it was used in their korowai and clothing. Have a look at our tamariki giving weaving a go.

We tried with flax and with paper.

Keelan is so focused as she threads the harakeke through the frame.

LJ carefully weaves the flax right to the end.

Sebastian threads the plant on top then underneath!

It really is quite tricky to go under and over, here the girls are trying with a paper weave.

Matariki Scones- Time for Kai

Eating food was suggested by many tamariki as a way of celebrating Matariki! Well Nikki had this well covered with the baking of tasty scones!

In go the ingredients!

                                                           Mixing, mixing and taking turns!

Rolled dough and whetū cutting time

Everyone works together here.

Time to share the kai to celebrate!

Chloe could see her scone really was a star!

Sky licked hers like a lolipop!

Scotty said hers was " Crunchy and soft."

Two of our friends share a pukapuka while they eat theirs!

There was fits of laughter coming from Austin and Cohen at Kai time today!

Hunter and Mason enjoyed the star delights.

Hudson chomped into his scone!

Santiago's turn! Mmmm
