A visit from St Johns

Recently , we have had a lot of superhero play at Uxbridge.  This seemed a  timely  occasion to introduce Donna from St Johns,  true superheroes from our community.   Donna bought in little Abby and lots of important information for our young  learners.  The children were  keen to be involved as  she supported  them with different sto ries and scenarios .  It was a challenge though, and one we became good at, using different  signals  to  show which service we would need in each emergency e.g. Fire, Ambulance , Police or all 3 , when ringing the important number  111 slowly on the phone.  By making equipment familiar and not scary, Donna showed us various equipment that maybe used in an accident, e.g., stethoscope for listening to heart, tummy and lungs, and also an oxygen tank and mask.  Donna showed us the equipment and also let us visualize the steam and feel the oxygen which looked like fog -Funny!   Also Donna showed us photos of the inside of a real ambulance  and what the equipment inside was used for e.g. stretcher and the mask which the St Johns  may need to use if you needed medicine. Donna  told us that if we needed to go in an ambulance, we could take a special person or persons with us to hospital e.g. Our Mum or Dad or if at Uxbridge 1 of our teachers.
Two young  volunteers  Jacob and Paige  helped us visualize other equipment they might wear, e.g. helmet , gloves  and  safety vest.  In one of our scenarios, we had a kind volunteer of Preston’s mum Kerry .  Kerry and Donna  were  role-playing  friends skateboarding , whoops oh dear Kerry fell over and broke her leg!  No problem, little Amby with her noisy siren with  helpful  on duty volunteers came to the rescue.  Bandaging  the bleeding leg and comforting the “patient “ before taking her to hospital.  We were all given the opportunity to use the bandages too—Fantastic.!!  The Siren was a little noisy and  disconcerting for some, but Donna was able to make it a fun situation by hearing some of the funny noises that little Amby made because she was sometimes  still learning which of her noises she should make in an emergency—Funny!

It's Super Hero Jo!!!!

We had a large, exuberant group of Super Heroes at Uxbridge today.

Jo asked the children to put their Super Hero powers into the Super Power Box for the duration of Bubble Time.

We read our Super Hero book aptly titled Super Manners Man.  We learned that Super Manners Man is very helpful and caring towards others.

As a group, we used our thinking caps to come up with some ideas of Super Power 'do's and dont's.  Then we had our photos taken wearing our Super Hero Cape.

Collecting the weeds!

Part of keeping our new playground beautiful is looking after our plants. With this in mind we are encouraging the children to help us weed the barked area's by backing up their trucks and taking out a load to the compost bin.  It is a bit tricky knowing what plants are weeds and what are plants we want to keep so we tried to explain by talking about size.  The small growths between the bark we can pull but not our big plants.  It was very important however to stay away from the Flower garden as we have lots of seedlings sprouting and they are small too.  We only weed the barked area's around the sandpit.  What a great helper Ethan and his friends were, so keen to keep our playground clean.

Monarch Butterfly

At the beginning of the year we decided to grow Swan plants in our previous vegetable garden patch.  Despite, having some issues with predators, namely the paper wasp, there have been a few successes.   Luckily we have been able to bring some small caterpillars inside, as well as some tiny eggs on the leaves.   Today after all the anticipation, watching the small caterpillars grow and through the metamorphous process change into a chrysalis and then today a beautiful Monarch butterfly.   Which we later let go back into our Uxbridge playground– hopefully for another chance to begin this cycle again—How  fascinating!  To extend on this interest we have also used finger plays , magnetic  songs,  circle butterfly games , butterfly art and of course the favourite story “The  Very Hungry Caterpillar”

The insects came out to play!!

Can you see the legs hiding in the spout of the teapot?  Iris and Finlay were a little shocked to discover they had a uninvited visitor to their tea party.

Iris thought it was a spider.  We discovered it wasn't Incy Wincy, or any other spider in fact.
We moved the teapot to the fence and repeatedly flushed the water spout..... and finally we saw the owner of the legs.
It reversed out of the spout and fell from the teapot and it didn't appear short nor stout. It was a beautiful, really active,  Weta.
It was rather thin, and appeared grumpy as it climbed up the fence.
Wetas are nocturnal so it was probably unhappy to be disturbed.
Next Mila said she had found a snake in the sandpit.  After a quick dip in Finlay's bucket we discovered the grey snake was actually a worm.
We discussed the best location for the worm to make its new home and the flower garden was the popular choice.
Renee then found a Ladybug.  A blue one, this is the last time I saw it.  Who knows where it will turn up tomorrow, or if we will have any more visitors coming out to play at Uxbridge.

Our sensory garden!

As part of our playground plans we wanted to include a sensory and herb garden.  We have started off with a planting little Rosemary, spring onions and lemon balm and hope to add more in the future. Thanks Mia who very kindly helped with the planting today x

There's a shark in the park!!

A new sculpture in the playground was quickly noticed by our friend Noah and some of his friends this morning "There's a shark in the park"!! they shouted out loudly to alert everyone.  Well fancy that!! It does look a little like a shark fin.  It's amazing all the little details in the playground that are noticed and how we connect and recall things. Shark in the Park is yet another favourite kindy book.
