Maths and Science through Microwave painting!

Today we had lots of fun exploring microwave painting, and there was so much learning happening along the way!

We had to listen carefully to the instructions and follow the process step by step to make our own paint mixture. We then added the ingredients, mixed them together and watched closely as the consistency began to change. There was lots of wonderful scientific thinking as we explored what happened when the different ingredients were combined.

Then came an important maths challenge! Carefully placing our paintings one at a time into the microwave, we had to work out which buttons needed to be pressed. Finding the 10 second we pressed it twice — 10 + 10 = 20 seconds — before finding the blue start button.

As the microwave worked, we watched each one closely and posed some questions -What do you think is going to happen? Will it look the same when it comes out?

Then… DING! That sound meant the 20 seconds had finished. It was time to open the door and see what had happened to the creation. How exciting to discover that the heat had changed our painting, creating a completely different texture and effect!

What a fun way to explore maths, science and literacy through art. We were counting, recognising numbers, following a sequence, making predictions and observing change — all while creating our very own microwave painting!
