Teamwork, Tunnels and Rory’s Pond!

Rory was working hard on a pond in the sandpit this morning and I couldn’t wait to join him to see what he was up to. Some friends along and we were invited into his game. Thanks Rory! What followed was a great display of team work, turn taking, problem solving, concentration and communication! What hard mahi with incredible learning, we dug troughs to put pipes into the sand to make water tunnels. The number one goal was to get the water from the water pump, into Rory’s pond (Sebastian’s big brother had been into visit kindy a few weeks before and many of the children enjoyed watching him do exactly this).

“ We need water.” The kids yelled and Ava was quick, “I’ll do it.” She replied and raced up to the water pump, before running back to see if it was working. “More water.” The tamariki chanted out, as they took turns to use the water pump.

It was wonderful to see some of the older children help our newer friends at Uxbridge out. This is an excellent example of fostering tuakana- teina which is a Maori concept we value here, in this case, the older more experienced children offered to assist, demonstrate and pass on their knowledge of how the water pump worked to the younger teina. Moments like this are magic, especially when it comes from within the child.

“It working!” Rory smiled as his pond began to be filled.

We all raced to see and felt pretty good that we had seen the plan through!

What a wonderful group activity and a great sense of achievement was felt by all!
