Project Jonah Comes to Visit Kindy
This afternoon we had 'The Jonah Project' come to visit us at Uxbridge. The aim behind this organization is to educate our children how we can help our mammal friends in the ocean whether it is picking up litter on our beaches or learning how to help if you spot a stranded ocean mammal.
The children were captivated as Amy arrived with a huge inflatable Orca that was set up in the sandpit. We joined her on the mat to hear all about the different types of Whales, Orcas, and Dolphins. We learnt sadly that there are only 50 Maui Dolphins left in the world, that live on the West coast of New Zealand.
We then used a tape measure so that the children could see how big some of these mammals were. Some were as wide as our class room, and the largest whale in the whole world measured from our sandpit all the way and more to the other side of our playground!.
A lot of children had prior knowledge about whales, knowing how they breath through their blowhole, dolphins balance with their dorsal fin Another interesting fact is that their tongue is as big as an elephant and their heart as big as a car.
With all this knowledge the children were excited to go to the sandpit and learn about how to tip water onto the stranded orca safely and where to stand and the importance of having towels covering it so it would stay wet and be protected from the sun.
