A trip to Kings Plant Barn

As part of our community project some of our older tamariki got to go on an exciting adventure to Kings Plant Barn to pick some flower plants on behalf of the children for the community garden that the play kitchen at Uxbridge overlooks.

This was a great way to connect with our community and practise our social skills and manners out. We were super impressed with our Uxbridge children using such great listening skills too! Ka Pai.

Getting out and about in our community creates links between home and the centre. There were many conversations about places they have been as we drove passed them. Many had visited Kings Plant barn before with their own whānau!

Being part of selecting the plants, creates a sense of ownership and learner agency where the children's voices are heard and acted on. Having real input into the decisions of the centre makes their learning real and valued.
They were able to carefully touch, smell and see the beautiful plants creating a full sensory experience connecting us to mother earth, Papatāūnuku.

The children showed such mana as they carried the selected plants back into Uxbridge for their peers to see.

Thanks to Nikki, Marley and Frank's Mum who helped us today.
Carefully placing the selected plants into the trolly.

Someone is enjoying the trip out! Lovely Samantha taking it all in.
