Making Paper!

Our learning is growing!!  From conservation week, we introduced the concepts of reduce, re-use and recycle to our tamariki and the different ways we can look after the environment.  With our commitment to recycling at Uxbridge, a perfect opportunity to make something new out of something old presented itself when we read our new book 'find out about recycling'.  How fantastic!  On the very last page was a step by step guide to making our very own paper out of old paper, we couldn't wait to get started!

Step 1
We started off by ripping the paper into small pieces, this turned out to be a group effort as we all joined in, filling many containers.  A big job!

"We are ripping up the paper" said Leo "We are making new paper".

Once our containers were full, we added the paper and warm water to the water trough and let it soak for a few days.

"How do we make warm water?" Deanne asks.
"You put hot and cold together" says Harland.

Step 2
We mashed up the paper with the electric blender, mashers and whisks to break the paper down

"We mixed it to mix all the paper up" said Marlo
"It had mixing power and went "Vrrrrh"
"It felt like porridge in my hands and I had to squeeze the water out" Elle says

Step3
Then poured a cup of the mixture onto a mesh frame, rolled it out and left it somewhere flat to dry

"This looks just like blu tak" Macy says

THE END
Our recycled paper!! Well done Tamariki, I wonder what we could re-use and recycle next??
