Hypothesizing and Predicting

After our rain clouds in a jar we decided to explore more science in a jar. This time we tried to Predict or hypothesize what would happen. We had a jar of water, before we poured the oil into the jar I asked the children "What will happen when the oil goes in the water?'
Some of the prediction's they came up with were, "The oil will sink to the bottom", "The water will change colour", "The oil will disappear".....
These were some great suggestion's. It was neat to see the different reactions as we watched the oil bubble in the water and it separate and sit on the top.
We then added drops of dye to the jar. The dye moved slowly through the oil, struggling to make it's way through but once it did sink through the oil it hit the water and burst like a fire work through the water. It was great to see how different liquids react to each other and chat about the density of the liquids. We finished of by putting small handful's of salt into the jar (just to see what would happen) , it bubbled the oil mixture and caused the oil bubbles to break down and make smaller bubbles. It is fun to explore without knowing what will happen and to Predict or guess what will happen or why it happened.
