The Living Egg Co delivered the Incubator and Brooder on Monday the 4th of March, and we have been watching with baited breath ever since!
This morning when the Kaiako arrived at Uxbridge, we were met with our first two chicks.
Once they were fluffy and dry we moved them into their Brooder, which will remain their home while they are with us. All the children are thoroughly enjoying watching them, and hopefully we will be able to witness at least one hatching during our sessions.
At today's Mat time, we shared our ideas about what it might be like to be a chick and push your way out of the egg. Last time we had the chicks, we played a game we called 'Crack the egg'. Some of the tamariki recalled this game, and asked to play it again. We wrapped a couple of volunteers up in brown paper and lightly taped them up with masking tape.
We then counted down from 5 before the 'chick' hatched from the egg!
There was so much laughter! It was a fun way to encourage tamariki to think about things from the perspective of the chicks and share their ideas about the hatching process.
