After a delay caused by the Covid lockdown our chickens have finally arrived! We were so excited to take delivery of 11 fertilised eggs on Monday. Our tamariki waited eagerly for the eggs to hatch, talking about what might happen and looking at our chicken books as they did so. On Tuesday their patience was rewarded as four of the chicks had started to pip their way out of the eggs.
"On my! It's a little hole. Wow its going to be a big hole." Riella
"Shhh we have to be very quiet" Eliza
Bodhi was curious about the information on top of the incubator and asked "What do those numbers mean on top?"
When we came into work on Wednesday it was to find seven fluffy yellow babies waiting for us with four eggs still to hatch.
We were so lucky that baby number eight decided to hatch during our session so we were all able to watch. She was followed by baby number nine late on Wednesday afternoon and babies ten and eleven overnight on Wednesday.
We have been doing lots of creative things inspired by our chicks."They might be fluffy like my jumper" Taylor
We explored the empty egg shells and were surprised at how hard they were. Our chicks had a big job to break through them!
The best thing of all is that we have been having cuddles with our new babies!!!
"Look they hatched, look mummy come!" Carter
