Hatching Chicks

We have been excited for a few weeks now for the arrival of our chickens eggs and on Monday they finally arrived. We got 11 eggs and we kept them nice and warm in the incubator. Some of us had seen this before and for some of us it's our first time. Everyone sat patiently watching the eggs - we looked at posters and books to see what was happening inside of the eggs. Then on Wednesday we arrived an 7 baby chickens had arrived!! They were so cute - we were very lucky to have another 3 hatch with us that day. Watching the pipping is very exciting and its takes a lot of work for our babies to get themselves out of the shell. They are very tired and wet when they are born. It was time to set up the brooder which will be their home for the next two weeks. We gave them light for warmth, some water and some food and the children made them a cozy bed form wood shavings. They have been a real delight to watch and we are excited to be able to have ahold in the coming days and weeks.

The incubator  - and some tired newborn chicks.

We have sat and watched and chatted about the process - using books and poster to give us information.

Patiently waiting for babies.

We have 5 girls and 5 boys. The yellow chicks are boys and the brown chicks are girls.

We could just watch them all day!!
