The Gingerbread Man

Run, run as fast as you can, you can't catch me...I'm the Gingerbread Man

It started in the Sandpit... some of our friends baking Gingerbread Men with the sand and putting them in the toy oven...we chanted together "Run, run as fast as you can, you can't catch me I'm the Gingerbread man" - We got out the books we had and found we had several stories of the Gingerbread Man, all with different pictures and slightly different words and over the next couple of weeks this became a favourite - the chant in this story really drawing the children in and we found them using it in their play too.

So of course we had to make our own Gingerbread Men.

The tamariki helped to make the dough, roll it out and cut the shape. Next we baked them in the oven and all got to decorate our own Gingerbread man - we were lucky that none of ours ran away before we could eat them. We had coloured icing, raisins, M&M's and marshmallows to be creative with and designed our Gingerbread Man however we liked. What a fun process and delicious too!!!

All the while we chanted "Run, run as fast as you can, you can't catch me I'm the gingerbread man". We even listened to a neat musical version of this story where we could move our body to actions of the story.
