Connecting with our Community

Sometimes in the business of life we sometimes forget the profound beauty of simple human connections.  Recently with the warmer weather we have had a few more people in the community using the walk way that backs onto our playground.  On this day there was a group of lovely ladies that were on an outing from Gulf Views Rest home.
Brenda* happened to stroll by with her walker and wanted to stop for a chat with our children.  Little did we know that this serendipitous meeting would leave  a mark on the hearts of both the children and Brenda* alike.

Her gentle voice captured the children's attention and with a twinkle in her eye she started to tell us that she was over 100 years old, and was once a  local school teacher and has lived in Howick for most of her life.

Mesmerized by her presence, she started to naturally get the group of children to sing the days of the week, count to ten and sing the ABC, and calmly told her nurse that she was busy teaching and she would catch up, I had a bit of a giggle. This moment was a delightful exchange of wisdom and wonder, bridging the generational gap effortlessly.

Our kindy children were so respectful during this interaction, and said a cheery goodbye.    Brenda* too walked away with a rejuvenated spirit and a huge smile upon her face, we hope to connect again soon.. We will be visiting the rest home next month, to continue to grow our community connection.
