We have been learning about the names of the Matariki stars and what they represent!
Kites are called Manu tukutuku . Birds are called Manu and kites fly like birds!
Our first type of traditional kite is called a Manu taratahi- a triangular shaped one with a point.
This was made from our harakeke plant and bamboo. Even the string used to tie it was from the harakeke plant. It was very tricky for our tamariki to tie with this string but they gave it a go.
After that, we decided to make mini manu taratahi for art! Inspired by our book, The Seven Kites of Matariki
Tāwhirimatea blow wind blow! Is a great song we have been enjoying and we wanted that wind to blow high with our other kite designs!
The tamariki decorated them with pens.
The first one was a folding design and the second type we used paper bags!
Check out the tassels on the paper bag kites! How beautiful.
