The art of weaving

We had a chat about some of the reasons weaving was used by māori. Ropes for fishing, baskets for cooking, mats for sitting and we even saw some beautiful bassinettes that were woven for pēpē , it was used in their korowai and clothing. Have a look at our tamariki giving weaving a go.

We tried with flax and with paper.

Keelan is so focused as she threads the harakeke through the frame.

LJ carefully weaves the flax right to the end.

Sebastian threads the plant on top then underneath!

It really is quite tricky to go under and over, here the girls are trying with a paper weave.
