Exploring gravity with art

As tamariki have been exploring Space, we have been learning about gravity.  Tamariki have vocalized their knowledge that gravity is what holds us to the earth.  To further extend and affirm this learning, tamariki explored gravity through art.

The children climbed up the step ladder and dropped a dye soaked pom pom to the floor below them.  Tamariki initially found it difficult to resist the urge to throw the pom pom at the floor.  We discussed the concept that gravity was the invisible force that was making the pom pom drop to the floor and just to open their fingers and let gravity do all the work.

This was a great experience and allowed tamariki to interact with the invisible gravitational pull to the earth. This was an extremely popular activity with a large number of children lined up to have a turn to experience gravity, and contribute to this collaborative art piece.

  1. What a great experience for them! Elle was telling me that the gravity pulled her pompom down in the car on the way home too. This display looks great on the wall too. Nice collaborative art piece there.
